Jun 12, Removing Tree Rings # Asked June 12,PM EDT I have several good sized trees (Elms and Japanese Maples) that were planted yrs ago, when I planted them I put tree rings around them filled with stone (didn't know better) recently I've been told how bad it can be and the trees have grown quite large.

Have you ever counted the rings on a stump to find out how old a tree was? If you have, you’ve already unlocked the secret to how trees tell us about climate conditions. You can see such rings on a stump or on a fallen tree truck that has been sawn through to clear a trail. It is very interesting to count the tree rings, so that you can estimate the age of the tree.
For example, I counted rings of a newly fallen redwood recently (see the highlights for November of Redwoods and Waterfalls: A Year of Walking in the Forest of Big Basin: The Berry Creek Falls Loop). To review, add mulch rings to small or medium size trees planted in the middle of lawn areas. Carefully remove the grass, install edger, dig a mulch trench cutting back hardy shrubs fill the circle with wood mulch.
You’ll keep your tree’s bark intact and healthy, thereby giving the tree a better chance to grow a healthy root stumpclearing.barted Reading Time: 6 mins. This can cause your tree to become distressed and start to die. Therefore, whether you use a shovel manually to remove the grass from your tree trunk base, or you utilize the newspaper method, your yard will be much more pleasing to the eye with a mulch ring around your tree.
A one-year cycle is comprised of a light pale wood that grew at the start of the year and a dark wood that grew at the end of the year. When a tree is cut, you will notice alternating light and dark wood rings. Count the dark rings, and you will get the tree’s age. Fortunately, you don’t have to cut a tree down to study its growth rings.
